Technological Independence: Exploring How Long It Takes to Fully Localize Manufacturing

07.06.2026

Ukraine’s defense industry faces a new challenge — maximizing the localization of components and manufacturing. At BlueBird Tech, we believe that technological independence is becoming one of the key priorities for the Ukrainian miltech sector.

According to BlueBird Tech Director Borys Budeianskyi, full production localization is not a matter of a single decision or contract. It is a long-term, systematic process that requires developing domestic engineering expertise, manufacturing capabilities, and new teams.

Borys adds that BlueBird Tech is already moving toward production localization; however, full independence is a phased process.

“This is a long journey. We need to create a path that we will follow gradually, step by step. The first thing we need to do is replace as many components of our products as possible with those we will produce ourselves,” says Borys Budeianskyi.

At BlueBird Tech, it is acknowledged that some electronics and radio components are still difficult to fully replace; however, work on alternatives is ongoing.

The company is convinced that developing domestic component manufacturing will allow Ukraine not only to strengthen its defense capabilities, but also to create a new high-tech sector of the economy with high added value.

“For a miltech company, a long-term path is essentially up to a year. We don’t have more time. Even a year today is a lot. If we are talking about replacing most components with our own solutions, that is the timeframe we see for ourselves,” adds Borys Budeianskyi.
