From the First Prototype to Today’s Drone Detector: Our Engineer Speaks to DefPulse

16.09.2026

The Head of Detection at BlueBird Tech’s R&D department gave an interview to DefPulse, discussing the evolution of the Chuyka drone detector, the technical decisions that shaped the device over several generations, its use cases, and the team’s future areas of development.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the personal drone detector market has evolved from isolated experimental projects into a full-fledged category of counter-UAS equipment. During this period, Chuyka has also progressed from a basic signal warning device to a multi-band detection system.

Several years have passed since the first prototype was built in a “steampunk-style” enclosure, and the approaches to the device’s architecture and functionality have changed. A solution that seemed reasonable at one stage may later create new limitations, particularly in terms of power consumption, simultaneous operation of multiple channels, and use scenarios.

In the interview, the engineer explains how the team made key technical decisions, which solutions had to be reconsidered during development, and why the team may soon have to move away from a modular architecture.

The interview also covers the use of the detector: which scenarios may reduce its effectiveness and why users need to interact with the device correctly. The engineer also discusses Chuyka 4.0 and possible directions for its future development.

Our engineer also answered what kind of drone detector could be created with unlimited time and a budget of one million dollars. The answer may surprise you.
